From a School Project to a Patented Platform

The Bark story began in 2014 when two Grade 9 learners from Bloemhof High School in Stellenbosch designed a Smart Alarm concept for low-income homes. Their idea won the Western Cape Premier’s Entrepreneurship Recognition Award (PERA) in 2015 — not for complexity, but for relevance. That early concept was later developed and refined by Marius de Villiers, resulting in the Bark systems available today.

That change: Confirms real danger. Alerts everyone nearby. Discourages intruders. This simple idea is protected by a South African patent. SA Patent No. 2019/06436. Traditional alarms rely on a single siren tone. Bark adds intelligence through Verification Sound Technology™. When a real threat is confirmed — via a panic input or secondary trigger — the alarm sound changes.
